The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
