The former Brazilian president detained after being declared a escape threat
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
